Career Days 2022

by Mrs. Rowena Guerrero, Career Day Coordinator

The Luis P. Untalan Middle School community enjoyed its first-ever virtual Career Days from April 4-8, 2022 and April 18-22, 2022 respectively.  The purpose of the event was to provide an extension of real-world, career exploration in alignment with the school’s mission of producing competent, productive, and responsible citizens in our society, and the district’s overall vision of producing students who are responsible, respectful, and ready for life.

Guest speakers who graciously accepted our school’s invitation to participate represented occupations from various U.S. Department of Labor career clusters and spoke about their duties and responsibilities, possible career pathways within their respective industries, necessary education, and potential income.  Of particular interest to students were careers within agriculture, cosmetology, criminal justice, National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, visual communications, the Guam Contractor's Association Trades Academy, the U.S. National Park Service, tourism, and the military.

Comments and feedback of the event were mostly positive and were representative of a broad spectrum of attendees.  Students asked several questions during each session and presenters gave good advice in return.   Some teachers reported students to be highly engaged and enjoyed certain presentations.  Other teachers inquired about programs offered in particular industries. The event was not without its challenges, however.

Perhaps the biggest challenge came from the online platform itself.  We were at the mercy of an unstable Internet and some glitches did occur. In addition, some presenters had a difficult time logging on to Zoom.  Of course, nothing beats face-to-face interaction, but through the wonders of technology, Covid-19 could not stop our Wildcat community from getting the job done.  In the end, we managed to overcome these glitches, provide valuable information to our students, and still reached our overall goal for a successful event!
