New Student Orientations

For all incoming 6th graders & new students, there will be a SY2024-SY2025 new student orientation on Thursday, July 18 for those whose last name begins with a letter from A through L at 9am or 11am. For students whose last names begin from M through Z, orientation will be on Friday, July 19 at 9am or 11am. Location will be announced at a later time.

Summer School Orientations

Accreditation status for Luis P. Untalan Middle School Reaffirmed

Based on the Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (ACS WASC) mid-cycle report with a one-day visit, Luis P. Untalan Middle School ‘s accreditation is now reaffirmed through the end of the current accreditation cycle ending on June 30, 2027.

This accreditation status is based on the information provided by the school, including the school's progress report, and the satisfactory completion of the mid-cycle accreditation visit.

8th Graders Have Momentous Promotional Ceremony

5-18-24: The 8th Grade Promotional Ceremony was beautifully held at the Father Duenas Memorial School's Phoenix Center. Hundreds of 8th graders from all teams were promoted together for the first time in a single ceremony since 2012. 5-15-24: It's been more than a decade—the Luis P. Untalan Middle School 8th Graders will again have a Promotional Ceremony on Friday, May 17th at the FD Phoenix Center. Students are allowed up to 5 guests and should sign out their tickets from their team teacher leader. Information letters were sent home with times and procedures for the venue. Students riding the bus to the event must have a fieldtrip form signed by parents.

WildBOTS win first place at GDOE robotics competition

5-18-24: In a competition with six robotics teams, the Luis P. Untalan Middle School WildBOTS won first place in Guam Department of Education's 2024 TCEA Robotics Competition, "Hi, Bye Pizza Pie." Second place went to the V.S.A. Benavente Middle School's team and Third Place went to Jose Rios Middle School's team.

Due to the pandemic, this it the first time in four years that GDOE has held the Texas-based competition and only the middle schools competed. Congratulations to the whole wildcats team and their coaches Mrs. Bernadeth Gumataotao and Mrs. Juvy Cariño.

8th Graders Can Dance the Night Away at the 8th Grade Ball

5-15-24: After months of planning, 8th graders can dance their middle school years away at this year's 8th Grade Ball! The Student Body Association is sponsoring "Written in the Stars" 8th Grade Ball on May 17 at the Guam Plaza Hotel. Dance with your friends to the sounds of DJ Vibe and get photos from a photo booth by Premium Art Photo. Students must have a signed permission form and parents/guardians must "sign in" and "sign out" students at the ball.

LPUMS Fierce Dance Team Slays at Competition

5-12-24: Congratulations to the LPUMS Fierce Dance Team for winning First Place for Small Group, Second Place for Large Group, and Third Place for Solo category at the Allied Dance Force Competition at Okkodo High School. The team competed against four other public and private middle schools.

Track & Field Team Races to 2nd Place Islandwide

5-11-24: Congratulations to the LPUMS Track and Field team for winning Second Place at the ALL-ISLAND middle school competition at the JFK track. The team competed against the Astumbo Dragons and the F.B. Leon Guerrero Hawks.

LPUMS Band Shares Music Talents at Spring Recital

5-8-24: Come and watch the Beginning Band, Concert Band, and Alumni Band perform at the 2024 Spring Recital at the Micronesia Mall Center Court on May 9 and 10. Please view the flyer.

Thank you to the all who have helped stepped in from the local music community to help our bands get prepared for their recital since Band Director Ms. Joanne Matanane-Sosa is currently ill and will not be able to join the bands that she has shaped all year. We wish her healing and speedy recovery.

5-4-24: Luis P. Untalan Middle School Safety Committee came out with a new Emergency Procedure Video, showing how to properly react during an emergency such as an earthquake, reverse lockdown, and shelter in place. Thank you to Mr. Jorge Emmanuel for editing the video.

Mrs. Cruz is Top 3 Coordinator

5-10-24: Congratulations to Mrs. Michelle Cruz, Pre-AP Jaguars Reading teacher, for ranking as the Top 3 Coordinator for the PBS 29th Annual Read-a-thon among elementary and middle schools islandwide. She was recently recognized by the Guam Legislature and received a $50 gas card and $50 Twinkles gift card.

NJHS Inducts New Members

4-27-24: Eight new members were inducted into the Luis P. Untalan Middle School Fine'nena Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society at the University of Guam Lecture Hall. New NJHS Officers for next year were also installed. Congratulations, wildcats!

Teacher of the Year Finalists Profiled in the Media

Two of this year's 6 Finalists for the Guam Department of Education's 2025 Teacher of the Year are from Luis P. Untalan Middle School! KUAM shot and edited these video profiles and showed them last week after the newscasts. The Guam Daily Post also wrote profile articles. The winner of the 2025 Teacher of the Year will be announced in a ceremony at the Government House on Friday, May 3.

Let's Finish the Year Strong, Wildcats!

4-19-24: During EXCEL period, Mrs. Guerrero spoke to the student body about all the activities that were coming up in the last weeks of classes, such as the district-wide testing, end-of-the-year field trips, and the 8th Grade Promotional. She also expressed to them what is expected of their behavior and the repercussions for students if they do not follow school rules and policies.

PTO Purchased Backboard Screens

The Parent-Teacher Organization used funds fundraised this year to purchase two, 75-inch screens to add to the school's backboard in the gym. "They will be used as digital scoreboards and for whatever else the school can utilize them for," said PTO President Joe Cruz, who recently installed one of the monitors himself. Thank you, PTO for providing a need to our athletes and our LPUMS sports program.

Wildcats Become Island Leaders

4-19-24: Wildcats participated in Island Leadership Day with 8th Grader Kaleb Togawa shadowing Guam Legislature Senator Joe San Agustin and 8th Grader Taylor Toves shadowing Supreme Court Judge Arthur Barcinas. For one day, numerous students from public, private, and charter schools were youth counterparts to Guam’s leaders in the Government of Guam, Legislature, Judiciary, and Mayor's Offices. The annual event hopes to "provide our island’s future workforce with a glimpse of the day-to-day operations and skill sets required for a high-functioning and responsive government," according to a Department of Youth Affairs release.

Wildcats Celebrate Autism Awareness with Spirit Week

Starting April 22, students can show their spirit and support autism awareness by following the daily themes. Students must wear uniform bottoms.

NJHS Taps New Members

4-8-24: Congratulations to the 8 students who were tapped to be new members into the National Junior Honor Society. The inductees were judged according to scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. Wildcats Win 7 out of 8 Categories

4-5-24—Congratulations to our Luis P. Untalan Middle School winners of the Guam History Day Competition—.wildcats won 7 out of 8 categories and 20 out of 21 student participants placed! Guam History Day is a subsidiary of the National History Day (NHD) Contest based at College Station Maryland. Students create in depth research projects at pre-collegiate and collegiate level through various mediums such as performance, websites, documentaries, papers and exhibits. PTO Hold Successful Carwash

4-7-24—The Parent-Teacher Organization held a carwash fundraiser for the 8th Grade promotion from 9am-2pm at the KFC Mangilao parking lot. Thank you for all the hard-working students, faculty, and parents who helped clean cars. And to the many drivers who donated to the fundraiser. It was a successful fundraiser with about $2,500 raised. Go wildcats!

The Student Body Association is looking for new toiletry items that will be donated to the Guam Homeless Coalition. Donations can be dropped off at B110 or to the Student Support Office from March 20 to April 19. Students who donated can receive an incentive. View the poster for more info.

LPUMS Holds School Science Fair

4-4-24: Hundreds of Science Fair projects were evaluated by about 30 judges from our community and school personnel. Thank you, judges, for volunteering your time! Great job to our STEM Departments for organizing the event and the students for all their hard work on creating their projects.

Wildcats Celebrate Mes CHamoru 2024

March 8, 2024— The 2024 Mes CHamoru Opening Ceremony jump-started this month's celebrations at Luis P. Untalan Middle School. Our cultural dance group, Lina’la’ I Famagu’on, performed, the Rai & Raina Royal Court was crowned, and singer Richard Hofschneider performed for the wildcat community in the school gym. Thank you to everyone who organized the ceremony including Señora Michelle Balajadia, Señora Perez, the P.E. Department, and the Parent-Teacher Organization.

The wildcat community are encouraged to celebrate Mes CHamoru with islandwear every Friday.

Wildcats are Academic Challenge Bowl Champions and will compete nationally in Chicago in June

Feb. 23, 2024: With just one question, the Luis P. Untalan Middle School Academic Challenge Bowl team beat St. John's School team to win the middle school championship and head to Chicago for the national competition! Congratulations to our hard-working team and advisors who held numerous practices for the past months in preparation for their matches. The championship team and one coach earns a trip to Chicago to compete in the Middle School National Academic Championship in June.

Coach Michelle Cruz said, "Mrs. Gumataotao and I approach ACB with the perspective that we are there not only to compete but to have fun and engage in the joy of learning. Learning that a trip to the national championship was added to the calendar was a surprise to us, but was not our main focus. Of course, I’m sure we all hoped we could prove ourselves and attain that final goal. We just tried to focus on one match at a time, despite having matches scheduled back to back. The tight schedule, tough competition, and the rush to get to the matches on time added to the pressure of doing well."
After the final match against St. John’s, Co-captain Jonathan Flis felt relieved. He said, “During the season, we encountered some pretty challenging teams, so we could never let our guard down, especially with the last game which was the most stressful as both St. John’s and our team were about equally matched. I also think that we have improved quite a bit not only during this season but over the year as a whole.”
Co-captain Kaleb Togawa was confident and said, “I felt like our team was capable of winning this time around and we sure did! Our last game on 2/23/24 was the most challenging one that we faced, and we won by a single question. It truly was a blessing! I also felt super relieved knowing that our public school can still excel in an academic competition with our private school counterparts. We did our absolute best and I’m am so proud of our team.”
Mrs. Cruz added, "As coaches, we were elated and so proud of how well our team performed, especially under the intense pressure and scrutiny they experienced during the last match. We are equally proud of their growth as competitors. We won the final match by one question! And, of course, we are happy to be able to represent LPUMS and GDOE public schools!"

Students Present at Adacao Elementary

Feb. 22, 2024—The school's Student Body Association officers and representatives presented at Adacao Elementary School to prepare the students about middle school life at LPUMS. Adacao is one of six elementary schools whose students "feed" into LPUMS. SBA Advisor Rozalyn Pama and Counselor Irene Aguilar coached and accompanied the group, who have also presented at PC Lujan Elementary and Liguan Elementary. The group will next visit Chief Brodie Memorial Elementary.

Wildcat Teachers are Teacher of the Year Semi-Finalists

Feb. 21, 2024—Two veteran Luis P. Untalan Middle School teachers were selected as Semi-Finalists for Guam Department of Education's Teacher of the Year Program. Marie Juvy Carino, Advanced Robotics teacher, and Madrid Borja, 8th Grade Reading teacher, were two of only 8 semi-finalists from the district.
Superintendent Dr. Erik Swanson said, "These dedicated educators have demonstrated exceptional commitment to their students and communities. Let's celebrate their passion and hard work."
Mrs. Carino and Mrs. Borja will next go through an interview round which will determine if they move on the Finals. GDOE's Teacher of the Year program is supported by numerous businesses, and past winners have received incentives including a car and a trip to Washington, DC to meet the President of the United States. According to the National Teacher of the Year program's website, "This acclaimed program has elevated educators from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA), and four U.S. territories."

Wildcats hold Career Fair, first in-person fair since Pandemic

Feb. 15, 2024—Wildcats were treated to a whole day about learning different careers—a morning of listening to numerous presentations and an afternoon of listening to the music of Joe Mendiola and catching a car show.
Thank you to Career Education teacher Kathleen Salas for organizing the successful event. We also appreciate all our presenters for showing our students the ins and outs of their careers.

PTO Showers Wildcats with Love

Feb. 12, 2024—Thank you to the Parent-Teacher Organization for donating 7 gift baskets filled with goodies for all teams to giveaway to students in the PTO Valentine's Raffle. All students in the team were eligible.
PTO also raffled off a $25 gift certificate to Outback and chocolates to one staff and one teacher. Thank you, PTO, for showering our wildcats with LOVE for Valentine's!

Congratulations NHD School Winners

Congratulations to this year's most hard-working history buffs! About 150 students from various Social Studies classes participated in National History Day to create projects in five categories: Paper, Website, Documentary, Performance and Exhibit. The Top 3 winners from all categories will go on to the island-wide competition in March. If they win there, they could represent Guam in Washington DC in June.

1-11-24: The Counseling Center have invited high schools to present to 8th graders in preparation to their transition to being high school students. One of the presentors on Jan. 11 was Ivan Aguilar, who is a recent graduate from John F. Kennedy High School. Other high schools have also presented and will continue in the coming months.

Congratulations to our Championship Team!

12-18-23: Awesome job to our Lady Wildcats for grabbing the 2023-2024 Interscholastic Sports Association (ISA) Middle School Girls Volleyball Championship! They were victorious over the VSA Benavente team in two straight sets 25-23 and 26-24.

The Lady Wildcats also had an impressive undefeated season! Congratulations to the team and Coach Rodney Pama!

Farewell Wildcat Teachers

Due to the district's maximization plan, we are losing five teachers who will be transferred to other schools. Farewell to: Cougars Math teacher Sydney Espinueva, Panthers Language Arts teacher Mikko Florencio, Physical Education teacher Gio Cariño, Tigers Science teacher Jose Gallego, and CHamoru teacher Jesus Lujan III (not pictured). Standing with them are Administrative Officer Jeannette Superales, Principal Agnes Guerrero, and Assistant Principal Cora Elane.

Staff Receive PBIS Training

The LPUMS staff spent some time in professional development during the Christmas Break. They received Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS) training on "Working with Tough Kids."

Jolly Wildcats Show their Holiday Spirit!

12-11-23: Wildcats donated toys for needy kids during the holidays for the Be Heartfelt Holiday Hope Toy Donation Drive. The toys were donated to the Be Heartfelt organization and went to students who participated in the Meal Pack Program. Thank you to the Student Body Association and the School Climate, Culture, and Engagement office (SCCE) for leading the toy drive for LPUMS.

3RD QTR Sports Signup

Hafa Adai Wildcats: 3rd quarter sports are Boys Basketball, Baseball and Girls Soccer! Those who are interested must sign up this week 12/11-12/15. Sign up sheets are near the SSO at the front courtyard. All must meet the requirements to be cleared to try out current or updated physical and must meet the grade requirements to participate. Tryouts will begin when the students return from Christmas break.

NJHS Leaders Attend Leadership Conference

12-2-23: Members of the LPUMS National Junior Honor Society attended a leadership conference organized by the Academy of Our Lady of Guam students. Several public and private middle schools attended the Saturday event. Students were able to do numerous activities to improve their leadership skills.

LPUMS approved for 4-year literacy grant, WeRead.

We are thrilled to announce that Luis P. Untalan Middle School has received approval for a 4-year grant under the Comprehensive Literacy State Development (CLSD) Program. One of our 8th-grade Reading teachers, Mrs. Madrid Borja, has spearheaded the development of the WeRead. Literacy Program aimed at increasing academic achievement in literacy.

This substantial grant, exceeding $100,000, will be allocated towards essential resources, comprehensive training, enticing incentives, and engaging activities. We are excited to share that the full implementation of the WeRead. Literacy Program is scheduled to commence in the upcoming school year.

Superintendent Swanson toured campus with off-island visitor

Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Swanson selected LPUMS as one of the three public schools to show Ms. Miller, Council of Chief State School, on November 30, 2023. Dr. Swanson and Ms. Miller toured our campus as well as talk to students, faculty and staff.

The budget presentation will be in conjunction with our Monthly General Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) meeting. The purpose of the budget presentation is to afford an opportunity to our stakeholders to review the proposed school’s budget and gather input. Parents are highly encouraged to attend and Out of District parents are required to attend. This is an ideal meeting to address our school’s needs. We look forward to seeing you there!

Wildcat Blazes to First at Islandwide Cross Country Meet

10-17-23: Congratulations to Zaiden Paulino and Maya Echang for placing in the Top Ten runners at the ISA Middle School Cross Country All-Island Meet. Zaiden was the fastest male runner, placing first and Maya placed 9th. The Astumbo Dragon Boys and the Agueda Pirates Girls won the team championship.

Boys Volleyball Grab 2nd Place

10-16-23: In their 10th Championship Finals in 12 years, the LPUMS Boys Volleyball A team went against Benavente Middle School on Oct. 16 at Okkodo High School for the ISA Middle School Volleyball Championship. Coached by Precious Pecson, the team made a valiant effort but lost to BMS in the third set. Congratulations to the team and Coach Pecson for all the hard work this season.

Mrs. Borja writes literacy grant

Mrs. Madrid Borja submitted our school’s Comprehensive Literacy Grant to C&I recently. "Her vision to promote literacy in our school community has been put into play!" said Mrs. Guerrero. "This grant will provide over $100K! Thank you very much Madrid for your time and expertise in writing up our school’s literacy grant!"

Hafa Adai LPUMS Parents/Guardians! Your PTO has graciously assumed the responsibility of planning and preparing for this school year’s 8th grade promotion. Sign ups for 2nd quarter sports will begin Oct. 2nd through Oct. 5th. 2nd quarter sports are Girls Volleyball, Boys & Girls Rugby. Boys Soccer (tentative). All interested must have an updated physical and must bring a copy for the Athletic Director. Tryouts location and times will be announced on Oct. 9th.

Open House Night

Open House was held on Thursday, Sept. 14 from 5:30pm to 7:15pm. Parents and guardians began the visit at the LPUMS Gym at 5:30pm with welcoming remarks from Mrs. Guerrero and the newly elected PTO officers. Parents were then be directed to visit their child's teams. Thank you to the National Junior Honor Society for having students guide our parents on campus. Parents were encouraged to attend to address any questions or concerns they may have with their child's classes.

“Our goal is to have every student attend school on their school campus,” said Superintendent K. Erik Swanson. “As inspections occur and repairs are made, we will continue to update our island community on our progress. I would like to thank all of the volunteers, families, and community partners who continue to assist our schools in preparation for inspection and reopening.”

"The Guam Department of Education (GDOE) would like to share with the island community that another school passed the Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) sanitary inspection. Luis P. Untalan Middle School (LPUMS) passed its week-long inspection.

GDOE is proud of the diligent work of LPUMS principal Agnes Guerrero and her school. Along with the GDOE Facilities & Maintenance team, Principal Guerrero and her team received a passing grade and can return to regular school operations."

Wildcats Donate 2K to Typhoon Relief

Thank you to everyone who contributed to raise over $2,000 for PTA President Joe Cruz and his family whose home was devastated by Typhoon Mawar. The family expressed their gratitude at the generosity of the wildcat community when gift certificates and cash were presented to him recently.
