Semester ends Jan. 10 & Other Important Dates

Take note that the First Semester ends on January 10, with some online students transferring their Mode of Learning (MOL) back to Face-to-Face beginning on January 11. Report cards will be distributed toward the middle of the month and at the end of the month, we will begin Picture Days from January 31 to Feb. 4.

SPARK Arrives at Untalan through New Equipment and Teacher Training
SPARK Trained: (From left) Mr. Mangune, Ms. Pieper, and Mr. Martin from the LPUMS Physical Education Department received online training in preparation for new equipment that will enhance the school's PE program.
12-10-21: Three Luis P. Untalan Middle School physical education teachers received training in the SPARK middle school curriculum from Nov. 29, 30 and Dec. 1. Mr. Emmanuel Mangune, Ms. Jasmine Pieper, and Mr. Merwin Martin were trained in 16 modules totaling three hours of synchorous Zoom sessions. SPARK, according to their website, is a company dedicated to creating, implementing, and evaluating research-based programs that promote life-long wellness.
The training is part of a federal grant by the University of Guam that will bring a plethora of new equipment worth about $10,000 to the school. "We will also be able to teach new health-enhancing activities to our students to encourage life-long, healthy activity that has yet to be done at our school," said Mr. Mangune, the head of the LPUMS PE department.
NEW PE EQUIPMENT: Some of the SPARK equipment were recently delivered to the school by the University of Guam.
Wildcats Ring in the Holiday Cheer with Spirit Week on Dec. 13-17
12-9-21: The last week before Christmas Break will be Spirit Week at the Luis P. Untalan Middle School campus. Please view the calendar to take part in the daily themes.
Students are reminded to follow the school's dress-down policy in the Student Handbook. Also, if students are not participating in Spirit Week, they should wear the school uniform.

Wildcats Highlight Programs on K57 Radio Show
12-3-21: Two seasoned teachers and our principal highlighted three of Luis P. Untalan Middle School's programs with GuamDOE Deputy Superintendent Joe Sanchez, who was guest-hosting Tony Lamorena's radio talk show on K57. Advanced Robotics teacher Juvy Carino talked about the history and benefits of the school's STEM program which began almost a decade ago, while Pre-AP Social Studies teacher Rodney Pama discussed the school's Pre-AP program, which began with one team in SY 2015-2016. Principal Agnes Guerrero added information to both topics. Before their one-hour was up, the group also discussed the successes and challenges in piloting standards-based grading since 2016, which has now been implemented district-wide. "We have so many exceptional programs that started at Untalan," Mrs. Carino said. "We were fortunate enough to highlight some of those during the program and yet we didn't have enough time to mention all of the amazing learning activities that our teachers and students do with just STEM & Pre-AP! But I hope the public had a glimpse of all the hard work and learning that continues to happen on our campus."
Wildcats Attend District Court Workshop on Emotional Intelligence
12-3-21: Luis P. Untalan Middle School Counselor Dhyana Edwards and 7th grade Social Studies teacher Liana Benavente attended the Emotional Intelligence Workshop at the Guam District Court.
Sponsored by the Pacific Judicial Council, the 2-day workshop was also attended by faculty & staff from Tiyan High School, Cabullido Elementary, the CNMI district, and (via Zoom) schools from Palau, Pohnlei, Kosrae, Chuuk, and Yap.
LPUMS Counselor Dhyana Edwards said that the curriculum is very important for all students: "I am so proud that LPUMS was chosen to pilot a curriculum that will help develop our students’ emotional intelligence. Because it has a scope and sequence that covers from the elementary years through high school, it can potentially have a positive impact on our entire community if students continue to apply the skills they learn in the program as adults."
Face-to-Face Classes Resume 5-Days of Attendance
GEB Requires Return to 5 Days of Instruction on Nov 29 - FINAL.pdf11-24-21: A resolution from the Guam Education Board last night voted to require GDOE schools to resume 5-day attendance for face-to-face classes starting next week. Today, the Superintendent sent out the following release, mandating that all schools begin regular schedules for all students who are attending face-to-face classes starting Monday, Nov. 29, after returning from a 4-day Thanksgiving holiday. For Luis P. Untalan Middle School students on block schedule, Monday will be a black day 1st through 4th periods. Everyone, please continue to wear a mask, stay 6 feet away from others, and wash/sanitize your hands throughout the day.

Wildcats are Boys Volleyball Champs
11-16-21: Congratulations to the Luis P. Untalan Middle School Boys Volleyball team! They captured the Guam Interscholastic Sports Association's Boys Volleyball Championship for the 4th year in a row! The A-Team, lead by Head Coach Precious Pecson and Assistant Coach Khloe Owen, are co-champs with Benavente Middle School. They finished the season with a 13-1 record.

Change of Model of Learning Forms Sent Out

9-15-21: Online students wishing to switch to Face-to-Face Model of Learning (MOL) in Second Semester now have the chance. All online students were sent the forms through their student email. Deadline to submit the form is Friday, Nov. 19, 2021.
If students decide to remain online, they do not need to complete the form. If a student decides to switch, he/she must be aware that his/her team and electives may change. Space is limited so requests should be signed by parents/guardians and submitted to the school as soon as possible. Face-to-face will be effective Jan. 11, 2022.
Parents/guardians may submit the forms online through wildcatsinfo@gdoe.net or in person at the school campus.

District Testing for All Students Nov. 15-19
11-9-21: LPUMS students will be administered the AIMSweb Fall Testing in Reading and Math next week Nov. 15- 19. This testing is critical for reporting purposes to US Department of Education due to the abundance of funding our school has received through the Consolidated Grant and the Education Stabilization Fund. Since our Face-To-Face students will be tested, our Online students will also need to test at the school. Read Mrs. Guerrero's letter for more info.
Reminders: Online students taking the AIMSweb test on campus must wear their school uniform. Depending on when they are on campus, they can bring their meals (breakfast or lunch) or snacks, but they must eat in the cafeteria. They are also allowed to eat the Sodexo breakfast and/or lunch served in the cafeteria.
Testing will be done on student laptops.
Wildcat Cross Country Team Sprint to the Finish
11-10-21: Congratulations to the Luis P. Untalan Middle School Boys and Girls Cross Country Team for placing 3rd at the All-Island Meet at the John F. Kennedy High School track. Lead by Coach Vince Borja and Assistant Coach Naomi Uncangco, four of the wildcats placed in the Top 20 overall. For the Girls: Eighth grader Gwenizah Barcinas finished 2nd place overall with a time of 10:31, Seventh grader Alir'ha Munoz finished 10th place with a time of 11:37, and Eighth grader Jaelyn Han finished 11th place with a time of 11:41. For the Boys: Sixth grader Rey Duran finished 17th with a time of 10:38. Congratulations, Cross Country wildcats!

Wildcat Family Celebrates Unity Day 2021
10-20&21: The Luis P. Untalan Middle School family celebrated Unity Day on Oct. 20 and 21, 2021 (due to having two cohort groups of students). Unity Day is a day to wear and share orange to show support for preventing bullying and promoting kindness, acceptance and inclusion.

Federally-Funded Supplies and Equipment Enrich Classes

10-14-21: At least one STEM Science teacher's classes received their federally-funded supplies today to help set up the STEM garden. "Here in Room E104, my Lions are learning that we are not above nature but rather a part of it. We practice sustainability by reducing waste and planting vegetables in our school garden," said Mr. Benny Chargualaf, who said setting up the LPUMS garden has been an important goal for him and his students When all teachers were given an allotment of $1,000 to spend on classroom supplies and equipment, Mr. Chargualaf knew just what to order. The LPUMS Garden has provided students with lessons that they will shape everyone's future. "We speak of a future that one day, Guahan and its people can feed ourselves. That when we respect nature, nature in turn takes care of us."
The supplies were administered by the Guam Department of Education (GDOE)- Federal Programs division/grants office and funded by the U.S. Department of Education - Consolidated Grant to the Outlying Areas and the Education Stabilization Fund - State Educational Agency (ESF-SEA).

10-13-21: Ms. Arlene Castro, 8th grade Science teacher in the Pre-AP Jaguars team, was one of the teachers featured in the Guam Daily Post article:
'Teachers nurture interest in aquaponics among students'
She is quoted as saying, "Students quickly learn that ecosystems are self-sustaining and can survive on their own, and aquaponics is a simulation of an ecosystem which they have to constantly maintain – turning their responsibilities into a multitude of simple experiments."

GDOE Seeks Your Input Through Surveys
10-1-21: Guam Department of Education is seeking input from all stakeholders. It is the end of the 4th quarter (for the fiscal year) and they must collect data for activities conducted under the Education Stabilization Fund. This is done quarterly to show the effective use of the department's dollars. Please select your title/position from the survey links below.
Wildcats Return to Face-to-Face Classes Sept. 27
9-22-21: Students under the Face-to-Face Mode of Learning will be returning to the campus on Sept. 27. Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero's Executive Order No. 2021-23, lifted the suspension of in-person classes as early as Sept. 20. There will be two cohorts, for students with last names from A-J and K-Z. Families with children who have different last names who would like to attend school at the same time may make arrangements with the administration.
Parents and guardians were informed today via the school bulletin system through Robocalls, emails, and texts. Please read the letter from Principal Agnes Guerrero.

Wildcat Makes it to Prestigious List for Science Fair Project
9-9-21: Luis P. Untalan Middle School 7th grade Jaguar, Anaiah Skye Tareyama, has made it into the Society for Science and Broadcom Foundation's Top 300 competitors in the 2021 Broadcom MASTERS® — the nation’s premier STEM competition for middle school students. She was selected among 1,841 entrants from around the nation for her Science Fair project from May 2021.
"It makes me excited and proud of myself because this is the first time Guam was represented in the Broadcom MASTERS," Anaiah said in a statement, "and to have placed in the Top 300 is an extreme honor."
"I would like to thank Mrs. Guerrero and Ms. Castro for their support and encouragement,"she said. "Special thanks to my family for always believing in me."

Sept. 7: Online Classes Begin and Learning Center Resumes
9-7-21: Online classes begin today. Classes follow the regular block bell schedule. Students should check with individual teachers via email or through Google Classroom post for their Zoom or Google Meet links for synchronous classes online.
The Community Learning Centers—where students can bring a laptop and utilize the school WIFI or use one of the school laptops—will resume operations today from 7am to 4pm in the school cafeteria. Please view the flyer for more information. Any GDOE student is welcomed, from elementary to high school, as long as they register here.
Parents Turn out for Laptop Distribution
9-1-21: Starting Sept. 1, parents were able to come on campus to borrow a school laptop for their child to use for online learning. The staff and administration organized the distribution, which was overwhelmingly successful as all of the laptops were distributed, with some parents who registered waiting for the following week so more laptops from the classroom carts could be set up.

MIFI & Laptop Applications
8-30-21: As all students transition online, parents/guardians can still apply to lease equipment from the school for their child. Below are the applications for the MIFI devices and student laptops. Please fill out the application by printing and submitting the completed application(s) to the school by Wednesday, SEPT. 1 or emailing the completed application(s) to wildcatsinfo@gdoe.net (email MUST be titled and labeled "LAPTOP APPLICATION"). Distribution of laptops will be from 8am to 2pm at the front of the school from Wednesday, Sept. 1 to Friday, Sept. 3. Face-to-Face Classes Suspended
8-30-21: Beginning Monday, Aug. 30, face-to-face classes have been suspended until further notice due to an executive order from Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero. Interscholastic sports has also been suspended. Please review the Executive Order 2021-21 for more information and the graphic below for more info.
From Aug. 30 until Sept. 3, GDOE will undergo professional development to prepare for all classes going online. No classes will be held this week, and classes will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 7 (Monday is Labor Day holiday). Read Superintendent Jon Fernandez's message on PNC
Student Attendance Procedures
In front of the Student Support Office (SSO), there is a basket and black box to drop off your excuse notes (see picture).
8-20-21: Face-to-face students who are absent from any of their classes must provide a note from a parent/guardian in order for their absence to be marked excused in Powerschool.
For Online students, please have a parent/guardian email an excuse note to Mrs. Gaylene Cruz, the assistant principal of Special Programs: gbcruz@gdoe.net.
Help with Student Emails
8-19-21: All Luis P. Untalan Middle School students have a GDOE email address in the format: abcd1234@students.gdoe.net. If students and their parents/guardians need assistance in resetting the password that was first given to them or one they set that they have forgotten, a parent/guardian can contact their child's team designated faculty for resetting passwords. Block Schedule Revised
8-18-21 Update: The bell schedule for this school year is Block: with 80-minute classes, 3 lunch periods, and two sets of alternating Black Days and Orange Days. It has been revised to remove the Wildcat Days on Fridays. For example>>> Aug 12: Black Day, Aug. 13: Orange Day, Aug. 16: Black Day, Aug. 17: Orange Day, Aug. 18: Black Day, Aug. 19: Orange Day, Aug. 20: Black Day.
8-18-21 Update: We will no longer have Wildcat Days on Fridays. The number of transition with having all 7 classes plus the 3 lunches is anticipated to cause more disruption and increased exposure of all students in the hallways.

8-18-21: Face-to-Face students this week were given an opportunity of pick up free school supplies during their lunch periods. Online students were able to pick up their set of supplies on Aug. 9. This is Round 1 for supplies, with a second round to include a different set of supplies for all students. The supplies were purchased with federal funds.

Students must only enter through the front walker gate at the front of the school. Students are not allowed to enter or leave at any of the side gates.
Car Riders
Pick up & Drop-off Area Update 8-13-21: Pick up and drop off areas have returned to the back parking lot of the school. It was previously moved to the front due to construction.
All car riders must be picked up no later than 3:40pm. Please adhere to this time because staff members have to stay back beyond their duty day to monitor students not picked up.
Reminders about COVID-19 Safety Procedures
One of the new procedures when students first enter campus is to wash their hands at one of three hand-washing stations at the front of the school. They will also have to do this at the beginning of each lunch period. Thank you to the LPUMS PTA for purchasing the washing stations. View the full video below.

Staff prepare for school opening
WILDCATS PREPARE—The staff of Luis P. Untalan Middle School prepared the school campus for weeks before classes started. From cutting the grass to unloading boxes of supplies to painting the hallways to getting student technology prepared, our staff worked really hard during the summer.

Wildcats Present at Student Orientations
7-28-21: Preparation for the new school went into full gear as the LPUMS campus welcomed new students and their parents/guardians. Current wildcats spent part of their summer getting ready and presenting to new students in the school's cafeteria for Student Orientations that were held from July 26-28. Parents: Finalize your Child's Mode of Learning
7/23/21: Parents or guardians who wish to change their child's Mode of Learning (MOL) from online to face-to-face would need to email Ms. Corazon Elane, Curriculum Administrator, at ceelane@gdoe.net.
The deadline to change MOL is Friday, July 23 by 5pm in order to finalize the schedules for all students. A SWIFT announcement via phone, text and email was sent out, informing parents and guardians to call the school at 300-2726/27 by the deadline.
Mandatory Uniform Policy Re-instituted
7/19/21: Parents and students, please review the Mandatory Uniform Policy that has been re-instituted for the up-coming school year at Luis P. Untalan Middle School. The flyer has a list of what students should and shouldn't do in terms of how to wear the uniform properly. <updated 7/23/21>
All students returning to LPUMS for SY 2021-2022 must follow the school’s uniform policy. Uniform tops and black bottoms are mandatory. The official uniform vendor is GINO’S in Tamuning. If you have any questions, please contact the school at 300-2726.
